The mysterious disappearance of ten-year-old Hilal Ercan from Hamburg caused a sensation throughout the country 19 years ago. At the end of January 1999, it disappeared without trace from the Elbgau-Passage shopping center in Hamburg-Lurup.
Now the Hamburg Special Commission decided "Cold Case" again in the case and searched for traces of the student in Volkspark on Monday morning.
The police arrived around 7 o'clock in a hundred in Volkspark. In addition, trucks and a mini-excavator! The search for a corpse in one of the most mysterious criminal cases of Hamburg began.
Will the case of Hilal Ercan finally be resolved?
The cold-case researchers searched for the remains of Hilal on Nansen Street with the support of a number of riot police.
Chainsaws removed shrubs and fell trees. Then the mini excavator came into use. Body-tracking dogs from the police were also used in the search.
Moments later, the officers searched the forest floor with so-called probe rods to find the body of Hilal.
In the course of the morning another area was uncovered by the officials in the Volkspark. Again bushes and trees had to be removed with heavy equipment first.
On-site were Kriminalhauptkommissar Steven Baack, who leads the research group "Cold Cases" of the police of Hamburg and Alexandra Klein of the State Criminal Police Hamburg.
► The police had searched on Nansenstraße 13 years ago, after Dirk A. had known the murder of Hilal and led the police to the People's Park. The body was not found, however, and the convicted child rapist later withdrew his confession.
According to the police, it is still unclear whether the man wanted to become important or whether it really was a suspect. The researchers emphasize that it will continue to be determined in all directions.
A few weeks ago the Soko "Cold Cases" led by Kriminalhauptkommissar Baack launched a new search call in Lurup – and received a concrete indication of the area in the Volkspark. The renewed search began …
