Parental leave: mothers who only take short-term parental leave have disadvantages in their work

Women who take up only two months of parental leave after their birth are punished if they do so during their work. This is evident from a study that will soon publish the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin for Social Research and is available for SPIEGEL.

Mothers who take parental leave for only a short time are often seen as selfish and hostile. For applications, they have even worse opportunities years later than mothers who have taken longer maternity leave.

For the study, scientist Lena Hipp wrote more than 700 fictitious applications. All aspirants seemed to work hard and had a three-year-old child. The only difference: on one occasion, according to the CV, they had taken two months of parental leave for this child and sometimes for a year.

The result: applicants who had been on parental leave for twelve months received an invitation for a job interview one and a half times as often as those with only two months of parental leave.

No differences in men

In a laboratory experiment with students, Hipp later discovered that: mothers who took longer parental leave were found to be more intelligent by the subjects, they took on more leadership skills and were regarded as better listeners, more cordial, benign, less intriguing and intimidating,

For men, the duration of parental leave according to the study does not play a role in their chances of work. Fathers who, according to the fictitious cv & # 39; s one year of parental leave, were invited almost as often for interviews as men with a two-month break.

A representative survey of the Institute for Employment Research concluded last year that most women (56 percent) consider a three-year baby break as suitable. Nearly 60 percent of women find a return to a full-time job justified if the child is seven years old. Young mothers, however, think differently: they want to work again after two years and four months.
