The federal minister of public health Jens Spahn wants new rules on organ donation: in the future every German should automatically be a donor, as long as he or the family members do not explicitly contradict this.
YOUTo get more organ donations in Germany, federal health minister Jens Spahn has called for a solution to the conflict. "Only in this way can organ donation become the norm", said the CDU politician of the newspaper "Bild".
Opposition solution means that everyone automatically counts as an organ donor – unless you contradict yourself or your family members. Up to now, recordings in Germany are only possible if someone explicitly agrees.
Such a new regulation represents an intervention of the state in the freedom of the individual, said Spahn. But all previous attempts by politicians to increase the number of organ donors were unfortunately unsuccessful. "That is why we need a broad public debate about the contradictory solution." He would not submit a bill to the Bundestag, Spahn stated and first spoke for a discussion on the subject in the Bundestag.
More time for transplant officials
In order to increase donations, Spahn had already announced that transplant staff in hospitals should be given more time to do this and that institutional rewards should be improved for the entire organ donation process.
According to the German foundation for organ transplantation, the number of organ donors last year reached a low point of 797. There was an increase in the first half of 2018. At the end of August, Spahn had said that 10,000 people in Germany are waiting for a donation.
