September 3 on Monday and PASOK celebrates its 44th birthday.
Sunday newspapers made their own tributes to the political party to talk about the day. Marilisa Xenogiannakopoulou, Panagiotis Kourouplis and Dimitris Kremastinos talk through their articles in the & # 39; New Page & # 39;
Xenogiannakopoulou: The establishment of PASOK undoubtedly ended the Transition
"The founding of PASOK undoubtedly ended the Transition. If it marks the transition to democracy in 1974, 1981 is the essential institutional and social integration and especially the reunification of Greek society after seventy years of double division, both before and after the war and the civil war.
Through the founding declaration of September 3, 1974 and the threefold "National Independence – popular sovereignty – social liberation", a truly radical, popular, progressive movement was established. It has united politics and socialist forces, fighters of the anti-dictatorial struggle and radical democrats. Social, with the strategy of the National People & # 39; s Unity, he expressed the vision of democratic and social change, addressed to many: workers, peasants, small and medium-sized professionals, scientists, people of labor, forgotten and oppressed Greece , popular neighborhoods and periphery, for young children with radical visions and the momentum of that liberation period.
The victory of Andreas Papandreou and PASOK in 1981 brought forward the expectations and the democratic and social struggle of many years and generations.
Within PASOK, the generation of the National Resistance and the spirit of the EAM, the Unconventional struggle and the "1-1-4", the resistance to the dictatorship and the Polytechnic, as well as the post-revolutionary generation of Change met. Greece has turned a page. Democracy has become entangled, national reconciliation has taken place and national resistance has been recognized. The social state and the NHS were established, the spirit of decentralization, regional development and self-government. Rights were guaranteed, from gender to free trade unionism. A new foreign policy of active presence and initiatives has been implemented, as well as a powerful effective negotiation at European level.
It is worth remembering the leading role of Andreas Papandreou for peace and international solidarity.
He was one of the few European leaders who prophetically supported the overcoming of the Cold War division with the vision of a Europe of the Urals to the Atlantic. It played a leading role in the formation of the South Front and renegotiated the conditions of our country's accession to the European Community, and secured the integrated programs of the Mediterranean and European cohesion policy. With a strategic perception and a sense of the economy, he knew when to veto, when to negotiate and when to courageously overcome, such as the issue of Cyprus' accession to the European Union. When it was officially placed in Corfu in June 1994 for the first time, many hastened to accuse him of demagoguery and utopian pursuits. Ten years later, however, he was condemned when the Republic of Cyprus became a member of the EU in 2004 without political pretenses, for the first time disrupting the mistakes of the Turkish invasion and occupation.
Today, the custody of 3 September remains up-to-date, at a time when the need for a strong progressive pole towards neoliberalism and the extreme right in the new conditions being formed is emphasized. After a difficult decade of crisis and memo policy, our country is changing its page. In the new period that begins the crucial issue, the implementation of a plan for institutional, development and social reconstruction of our country. The challenges are numerous as are the difficulties. The next day's struggle requires collective effort and internal involvement, alliances and policy change in Europe, so that the next day's plan has a moving signal and expresses a broader progressive political and social majority. Kourouplis: PASOK fell and in the 1970s created the conditions for the overthrow of the political establishment of the country
"The progressive forces in the human capital that remain after the occupation and the civil war, the forces that resist the violence and the lawlessness of the rule of law, the forces of" 1-1-4 "and the battle of Anadotus that the souls of The Greeks, the forces that oppose the Julian coup and the apostasy against the loving government of the Union Center and the forces of the Polytechnic strived for political and social expression.
The founding of PASOK and the statement of 3 September was a historical, as it turned out, necessity, expressed by Andreas Papandreou. Thus a movement was built that entered all the towns and villages, in the homes and souls of most people. This movement faded and created the conditions for the overthrow of the political establishment of the country in the 1970s, giving way to all the hardened and brought to power political forces that until then had the consequences of social and political exclusion.
PASOK voiced disadvantaged Greeks and transformed them from passive recipients of regulation of their destiny from others to active and creative citizens who demanded a role and participation in the events of Greek society. The central effort of the first decade was the overthrow of social structures that marginalized people, as well as the reduction of social and economic inequalities.
The current PASOK, with its mutations under modernization, was not able to defend those who defended his values in the seventies, eighties and nineties. So, a movement that had political eroticism in him and brought together millions of people around him was in complete collapse because unreliability replaced his credibility.
But the years of the great misbehavior of ideological choices came true, while the Greek people voted for PASOK, the power was finally given to Samaras. The historian of the future will judge, with greater calm and sobriety, the political responsibilities and causes that led to the ideological and social collapse of the former Movement, which does not seem to care its current leaders.
In politics one must be visionary and realistic. Today there is a new political reality, the need to create a large left, democratic and socialist faction. This need must be understood by the world and SYRIZA, but also from the broader center links and an expression of such a front against extreme neoliberalism is Alexis Tsipras. It is a requirement of this time to get rid of political complexes and shifts and to develop a fruitful dialogue in the wider environment, which will lead to programmatic convergence after the elections. If this does not happen with the political co-responsibility of all of us, we will be responsible for repeating what happened after the death of Eleftherios Venizelos. The lack of political cooperation of the democratic forces at that time led to the construction of the one-party state from the right for 50 years to 1981, with the known and devastating consequences for our people. Kremastios: Andreas Papandreou & # 39; s great power of PASOK was his self-organization and the lively communication of the base with the top of the party
"The annual celebration of September 3 is of particular importance, even though it has been accepted today by everyone that the global and internal social changes that have occurred make it unthinkable to adhere strictly to the principles and explanations of that time. particularly opportune to celebrate September 3, as the new center-left party is formed.
With regard to these principles, the emerging Central Left Party with a similar declaration should define a new framework whose national independence and popular sovereignty, which together with tackling social inequality have shrunk, will be the pillars. Put simply, it should appeal to the citizen who has traditionally supported the Center's strengths and convinces him that he will react reliably to his problems, distinguishing both Right and Traditional Left with clear positions and no anoristics.
What the historical statement of 3 September wrote was the fact that the close attachment to principles and values, combined with the organization of the party from the city to the last village, was the element that brought about the overthrow of politics. And that is exactly what the new center-left party is going to do now.
Then Andreas Papandreou did not accept the chairmanship of the Center parties that were offered to him. Nor was it even possible for a system of interparliamentary elections to claim this presidency. He remained true to his principles, even when he was defeated in the first election after the election with 13.6% against 20.4% of Georgios Mavros, who was the leader of the Center's traditional forces. The painful memories of Andreas Papandreou at the multi-party operation of the Union Center did not even let him think he could live in a political scheme with leaders and fellow human beings.
People have long proved that they do not appreciate political cooperation with the aim of political survival. On the contrary, it seeks ideological purity and clear dividing lines between the parties that must choose it.
The great strength of PASOK Andreas Papandreou was his self-organization and the live communication of the basis with the top of the party. When it was lost by the dissolution of its organizations, the big weakness of the party manifested itself. The non-existence of organizations has made it possible for ambitious and irresponsible votes from the opposition to promise everything to everyone with fantastic benefits and to convince traditional and hopeful PASOK fans that there was another way PASOK did not follow.
But a road that eventually led the country to worse tax havens and extra cuts in wages and pensions instead of the restoration of normality promised by both the New Democracy and SYRIZA.
Reconstruction of the center-left is historically necessary.
But the success of the enterprise in the way it is tried will be assessed primarily, directly or indirectly, when the designated organs are replaced by real elected representatives. From the moment the 212,000 who came to the ballot box, will immediately or implicitly express what the Central Committee should be or what the Political Council should be. Otherwise the new player threatens to become a coalition of small pieces and trends that only strive to have their political survival in the upcoming elections. The operation of truly elective organs from the base to the top is a condition for the regeneration of the center-left.
