On Friday, India's largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, launched an initiative to provide fast roadside assistance to its customers. The initiative, called the Quick Response Team (QRT) on bicycles, offers road-assistance to the cars of its customers in 251 cities in the first phase.

"We start with 350 motorcycles in more than 250 cities and the initiative will be expanded to 500 cities by the end of 2020," said MD Kenichi Ayukawa, director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki.

The launch of the QRT on Bikes is a strategic decision to quickly assist customers of cars that may have been on the road, he added. "The QRT bikes can reach the ailing vehicle in less time in cities with a lot of traffic, which also reduces the stress level of the owner … this initiative will take the service of Maruti Suzuki for customer service to the next level", Ayukawa said .

Every QRT cyclist will be equipped with essential tools and essential spare parts needed to quickly repair the vehicle in need. "The QRT technicians can handle about 90% of the problems relating to customers in the event of a breakdown," the company said in a statement.

Maruti Suzuki's Director, Service, Partho Banerjee added that the company receives on average about 10,000 calls per month for roadside assistance.

How does it work?

When a customer of Maruti Suzuki reports a vehicle failure, a web-based system identifies the GPS location of the technician in the vicinity and assigns the complaint. The customer and technician can connect via the telephone and view each other's location and the estimated arrival time via the Maruti Care mobile app. The technicians, the company said, are equipped with a battery jump starter, tire pump, a tool box, among others. The QRT on Bikes joins a fleet of more than 415 Maruti Suzuki On-Road Service (MoS) vehicles to assist customer cars.
