Satya Pal Malik was sworn in as J & K governor Thursday. He is the first politician to have been appointed governor of the state in more than four decades. Higher state politicians, including former head ministers Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, attended the swearing in of Raj Bhawan.

Malik replaced career diplomat N N Vohra, who, after his second tenure as governor, was granted an extension of two months.

In the absence of an elected government, Malik's first major challenge will be to carry out panchayat surveys in the state. Vohra had announced that the polls would be held in the valley in September.

However, Malik's immediate challenge is to guarantee peace in the valley, since the Supreme Court hears the petitions in which Article 35-A is challenged later this month.
