Cyberpunk 2077: everything we learned from the new gameplay demo

Now that is a Cyberpunk logo.

CD Projekt Red

After the gameplay, demo's for Cyberpunk 2077 were presented to the media behind closed doors on both E3 2018 and Gamescom 2018, so fans can finally watch the game themselves. Developer CD Projekt Red has released its first public gameplay showcase on Monday, after a cryptic Twitch stream of seemingly random code (and building up a lot of excitement).

The audience still had to see what the gameplay of Cyberpunk 2077 looks like. And although we were treated in an instant to behind closed doors with a bit of gameplay, we certainly did not get the exhausting passage we had hoped for, and we were also unable to share images of what we had seen. But that has all changed with the 48-minute gameplay walk-through that everyone gets to see, and it's a doozy. Scroll down for more information about those images. But for those who are fresh in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, we have some introductory information.

Why is there so much hype for Cyberpunk 2077?

For the context, CD Projekt Red released a stunning teaser trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 for the first time in January 2013. Since then, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 have been released; CD Projekt Red has taken the world by storm The Witcher 3 and its extensions; and Nintendo went from console games to the top of the world. Meanwhile, all fans remained about that only teaser.

Although fans were left in the dark for years, CD Projekt Red was adamant that the game was still under development. Yet no screenshots, gameplay recordings or demo's have surfaced in the five years since the first trailer. But as we now know, there were rumors that the game was finally in the spotlight – especially after CD Projekt Red filed a new trademark for Cyberpunk 2077 prior to the conference – eventually rightly.

But after years of anticipation, the second trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 arrived during E3 2018. As was warmly received as that trailer, and just as complete as interviews with developers after the trailer, a blatant omission remained. There was still no public gameplay showcase.

But finally that gameplay trailer has arrived, and you can view it here:

What about the world of Cyberpunk 2077?

To understand Cyberpunk 2077, you first need to know Cyberpunk 2020. The latter was a popular role-play of the late eighties and early 1990s in which many cyberpunk tropes were processed. There is cybernetic improvement, nasty corporations, devious punk-rock hackers, neo-noir aesthetics, freaky future drugs and trench coats. So many trench coats.

The US are at the mercy of megacorporations after the world has actually gone to hell. These mega-corps are borrowed with their own areas of interest and secret plots to gain dominion over the others. In that militant environment rests California's Night City, where players play their adventures as business addicts, rebel rock and roll stars, street doctors or ordinary old cyborg hitmen.

Although cyberpunk itself has gained popularity, its influence can be seen everywhere the most recent Blade Runner to the (soon to be abandoned) Android: Netrunner card game. Cyberpunk 2077 will re-record the series 50 years later, with the trailer pointing to robotics that are far advanced beyond what was seen in the original pen-and-paper RPG. And outside the things that resemble the appropriate cyberpunk, the state of the world and the many mega-corpses are virtually unknown.

What kind of game is Cyberpunk 2077?

After The Witcher trilogy and the enormous graphical and game design improvements that have been applied to each item, it is safe to say that CD Projekt Red has proven itself to be an RPG titan. So it's no surprise that Cyberpunk 2077 is promised to become an RPG with player choice, complex interactions with non-player characters and the world that influence the story, and thorough characterization.

It is not only your gender or hair color that you can adjust, you also get options to define the background story of your character, including childhood events, that affect the way you will experience the game later.

What might surprise some fans is the perspective of Cyberpunk 2077. Unlike The Witcher 3, an RPG of a third person, the Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person RPG.

As you can see in the gameplay demo, elements of fighting, loot and world travel are reminiscent of first-person RPGs such as Deus Ex and Fallout, complete with slow-mo shooting, branching dialogue options, scanning for enemy weaknesses and identify features and even a hacking system that allows players to explore full networks after they have been started up in people who are connected to that network.

Transport can be handled on foot, with players having the potential for double jumping and other mobility improvements, or in vehicles that vary between motorcycles and cars that can be driven in the first or third person.

That passage through the open world can lead to random encounters with gangs or mega-corporations representing sudden combat scenarios, as we saw in the demo when a trip to a goal was interrupted by a chase and a shooting.

Combat offers shooting and combat options, with a range of expected (pistols, shotguns) weapons mixed with futuristic rifles and robotic blades built into your cybernetic body, should you choose to install them. That kind of customization is not only linked to the first character creation, where initial statistics can be assigned to determine where your character is best suited for, but to increase and improve than to be equipped or acquired in the world. If you choose, those augmentations can focus on non-combat functions, allowing you to talk or find a way out of a difficult situation or a fight scenario.

"Even though it is a completely different game than The Witcher 3 without a predefined character, a futuristic world … the product character: it will be just like The Witcher 3 – namely a game for one player bought for a one-time fee," said CD Projekt Red CEO earlier this year at a financial conference.

So much for that talk about multiplayer.

What have we seen of Cyberpunk 2077 on Gamescom 2018?

Nice to meet you, Night City.

During the briefing of 50 minutes in a cinema on Gamescom, we were shown a part of the game where protagonist & # 39; V & # 39; (in this case a female character) interacts with some main characters in the game. The first task we saw was to find a kidnapped girl, held by a few baddies, under the spell of life difficult for V. What followed was a gunfight with a variety of futuristic weapons, where V buffs used (administered with what looked like an asthma inhaler) that delayed the time to help V make her photos.

Once the girl was found, V found a deceptive chip in a slot in the girl's head, apparently blocking the tracking signal. Chip removed, the girl was localized by another team and brought to safety. It was an intense piece of action and it looked beautiful. The guns were enlarged – you could shoot through walls while someone else is able to hit bullets from walls, kill you around corners – and there's a great katana that also creates a bullet shield.

After the wheel shootout, we saw how V gets biomechanical upgrades. V traveled to what appeared to be a grubby operation on the back rail, where she was sitting on the chair of a "doctor & # 39; and we saw some of the upgrade options. In particular, there was a new eye upgrade that made zooming and scanning possible. Installing it was not a nice process. A big claw crept to our face (remember that the game is in the first person) and came closer and closer to our eyes. Then it came out. Our vision was suddenly transferred to a new eye, sitting on a table in the neighborhood, which was then returned to our waiting head. It was a nauseating touch, although that could have been the promotional beers that we had in advance.

As the demo progressed, we saw V encountering an evil female character who gave V-money to buy a piece of military equipment from a gang (the background story of this whole setup was missing us at the time). It turned out that the money was kept on a computer chip that told us in advance that it had been contaminated with some kind of virus. The Cyberpunk team that gave the demo used this to mark an important element of the gameplay – the decisions you take on different missions.

Decisions decisions.

When you finally meet the gang to buy a required robot, you get multiple options, including giving the money and saying nothing about the virus, explaining the potential virus or just shooting everyone. The game is apparently full of these decisions, which will result in different experiences and different storylines as the game progresses. Apart from the fact that you feel the game more compelling, this also provides a great replay value, because you can go back and make other choices for a fresh play-through.

The graphics were, of course, amazing, and it has indeed been debated by some whether the graphics shown up to now in screenshots go beyond what the current generation of platforms can achieve.

While it is determined that the demo is made from a work-in-progress build, the hardware running is not specified. It is possible that Cyberpunk 2077 could follow in the footsteps of Grand Theft Auto 5 and have both current and next-gen versions shortly after the launch.

On what platforms will Cyberpunk be 2077?

Given that The second Cyberpunk 2077 trailer premiered during Microsoft & # 39; s E3 2018 press eventYes, it comes to Xbox and PC. Preorders are currently available for Xbox One, PS4 and PC versions of the game.

When does Cyberpunk 2077 come out?

At this rate everything we can say is probably 2077. In the secret text of the second trailer, CD Projekt Red had this to say:

"When we told you we would only release the game when it was done, we thought it was, we are certainly much, much closer to a release date than we were then :), but it is still not the time to confirm so patience is still required. "

And if you're worried, 2077 microtransactions, incremental DLC (downloadable content) and so on are missing in Cyberpunk. From that trailer text:

"Expect nothing less than with The Witcher 3. As far as DRM is concerned, CP2077 will be 100% DRM-free on the PC."

Where can I view more rumors and speculations?

What, do not you want to stay here forever? The subreddit r / CyberpunkGame has been a fantastic gateway to the Cyberpunk fandom and they have had a lot of fun with all teasers and trailers from CD Projekt Red.

cyberpunk-2077 subreddit

Cyberpunks of the world, unite and take over.

CD Projekt Red

As you can expect, the community has compared Cyberpunk 2077 with previous CD Projekt Red games such as The Witcher 3.

And there is an interesting back-and-forth feeling between fans as to whether the daytime setting of the second trailer is too far away from the dark and rainy atmosphere that characterizes the cyberpunk genre (including that first trailer!)

But, as mentioned earlier, the main contribution of the subreddit to the E3 firestorm so far is decoding the additional messages from the trailer directly from CD Projekt Red. And if the track record of the community is an indicator, there will be much more decoding, unraveling and unveiling.
