The former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee died: despite the best efforts, we lost him, AIIMS said
Atal Bihari Vajpayee, three times Prime Minister of India and one of the most respected politicians in the country is dead. The announcement was made by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences or AIIMS, where the 93-year-old was treated by a team of doctors for nine weeks.
The center announced a seven-day mourning throughout India and was a funeral for the former prime minister at Smriti Sthal in the national capital.
Several state governments including Delhi, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh Punjab and Uttarakhand announced a holiday on Friday as a sign of respect for Atal Bihari Vajpayee.  Mr. Vajpayee, the highest leader of the BJP, was admitted to the hospital on June 11 with a urinary tract infection and chest congestion.

“Unfortunately, his condition has worsened over the last 36 hours and life support systems have been entrusted to him, despite the best efforts, we lost him today,” said AIIMS statement
Atal Bihari Vajpayee died at 5.05 in the evening.
“He lived for the nation and he has been assiduously serving for decades,” wrote the PM Modi soon after, defining his death “the end of an era”.
Congressman Rahul Gandhi said that India had lost a “big son” “loved and respected by millions”.
The patriarch of the BJP announced his retirement from the political elections at a public meeting in Mumbai in 2005. It was no surprise to many: he was not doing well.
Since 2009, the veteran politician had been confined to his home on Krishna Menon Marg in the heart of Delhi, away from public life because of his lack of health.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee was considered the gold standard of leadership in the BJP and had admirers even among rival parties. His birthday – December 25 – is celebrated as Good Governance Day.
In the morning, BJP head Amit Shah and Union minister Raj Riath Singh, JP Nadda and Venkaiah Naidu and many other leaders had been visiting the hospital.
In the BJP headquarters in Delhi, the decorations prepared for Wednesday’s Independence Day celebrations were withdrawn while a grim note took over.  LK Advani, one of Mr Vajpayee’s closest colleagues and his deputy of the NDA government from 1998 to 2004, was among the visitors.
“For me Atalji was more than a senior colleague – he was actually my best friend for over 65 years,” Advani said in a statement.
