FAJAR.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Cigarettes and air pollution are risk factors to make the lungs unwell. One is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Someone with the disease, every breath is a struggle. Even blowing something made them gasp for breath. COPD is a progressive chronic respiratory disease that makes it difficult for patients to breathe because of the limited airflow.
Pulmonologist at the Department of Pulmonary Diseases and Respiratory Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia Prof. dr. Dr. Faisal Yunus explained the symptoms or signs of the disease. Most patients come with complaints, such as shortness of breath.
"Patients are easily out of breath when they go up and down stairs and already have a disability." Very rarely do they come up with the first symptoms because they are not aware of the first symptoms of the disease, "he said in a written statement by Royal Philips, Sunday (25/11).
In addition, many also think that regular physical exercise or a visit to an area with clean air can prevent lung diseases. Even if it is not true.
"Substances that have accumulated in the lungs due to cigarette smoke and air pollution will not disappear, those who already have symptoms and get worse should go to the doctor," he explained.
Although COPD is a chronic, incurable disease, this does not mean that it is a debilitating disease. Patients will still be able to live well, even if they have COPD, as long as they adhere to their care and treatment, thereby reducing the worsening of the disease.
Other symptoms are,
Chronic cough that persists for several weeks.
The presence of sputum or mucus production
Wheezing and tightness in the chest.
