Scientists discovered at that time the original form of the Earth's core, by seeing crystals as large as grains of sand.
They took plagioclaas and clinopyroxene – mineral formed in 565 million years ago – in what is now East Quebec, Canada.
These samples contain small magnetic needles of about 50 to 100 nanometers, which at that moment focus on the magnetic field – located in molten rock.
"These tiny magnetic particles are ideal magnetic recorders," said co-author John Tarduno, chairman of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and a professor at the University of Rochester, New York, USA.
"When the particles cool down, they lock the earth's magnetic field that is maintained for billions of years," he continued, as quoted from Live Science, Thursday (31-1-2019).
So, by attaching crystals to a magnetometer, the researchers can find out that the particle charge is very low. In fact, the Earth's magnetic field was 10 times stronger than it is now 565 million years ago.
