13-year-old boy married the 17-year-old woman in Bantaeng – VIVA

VIVA – Early marriage took place in Bantaeng District, South Sulawesi. Reski, the 13-year-old boy, is married to Mia, a 17-year-old girl.

The marriage contract took place at the private residence of the bride, Bonto Marannu Village, Uluere Subdistrict, Bantaeng on Thursday August 30, 2018. In fact, this young Reski had just finished primary school. Meanwhile, Mia is a level 2 student at a high school.

With reference to Law No. 1 of 1974 on marriage, the marriage of these two children must have violated the rules. Because article 7 paragraph (1) stipulates that marriage is only permitted if the man has reached the age of 19 and the woman has reached the age of 16 years.

The Bantaeng district government regretted the actions of the two brides who blessed this early marriage.

Head of the Bantaeng Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Agency (Kabid) Division, Syamsuniar Malik, said he did not accept the report of the planned marriage. Syamsuniar also said that this marriage had not been reported to the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA).

"We did not have time to detect until the marriage contract took place, so we did not have time to provide mentorship and guidance," Syamsuniar said.

Syamsuniar suspected that the two brides' family did not report their son's marriage to KUA because he believed he would be rejected. Syamsuniar was also concerned about this marriage.

"The government has been enormously massive in carrying out socialization in Bantaeng District, but what we want to say is beyond our ability." If God wants it, we will try to understand the law and its consequences more in the future, "Syamsuniar said.
