Gardaí consult DPP about stitches

Senior officers last night in consultation with the DPP about whether or not to file charges against a man who was arrested for the deadly stabbing of a 63-year-old father in South Dublin.

Gerard Fortune received a knife wound on his neck in his home at Rutland Grove, Crumlin, around 8:00 PM on Sunday.

It is assumed that the attack took place in the terraced house.

The attacker stole a car afterwards and drove through the city with speed to Blanchardstown in the north-west of Dublin.

Gardai followed his car 20 minutes later and managed to arrest him and take him into custody.

The man is known to the deceased and there were no signs of forced entry into the house.

His daughters were comforted by neighbors on the scene. A daughter described her father as a "sweet man", who would be very missed.

She said her father did not deserve to die like he did.

A neighbor expressed his shock about what was happening, but said he did not hear any sound.

He described the deceased as a "silent man" who "loved himself".

Gardai placed large plastic plates over the driveway and the outside paving, as well as over the car parked in the driveway, to store any evidence.

Mr Fortune had a long-term relationship with Eileen Lambe and they lived together in the house and had a number of children.

He had previously been married to another woman and had a number of children with him.

It is intended that the deceased has worked in the nearby St James & # 39; s Hospital.

He was taken there by ambulance after the neighbors had called 999. A short time later he was declared dead in the hospital.

Officers of the Sundrive Road Garda Station have set up a murder investigation.

The suspect was detained at the nearby Crumlin Garda station for interrogation under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. This ensures 24-hour storage, excluding sleep interruptions.

At the Sundrive Road Garda station, Commissioner Michael Cryan appealed to the public for help.
