Hero-sailor Gregor McGuckin insists that he would have no doubt that it would be alright for him, despite the fact that his hunt rolled over twice as he tried to sail the world.

McGuckin (32) – from Goatstown in Dublin – saw the top of his boat heavily damaged after a massive storm on September 20-21 when he attempted the Golden Globe Race.

While he was not worried about sinking, McGuckin knew he was out of the race and had heard that the injured Indian sailor Abhilash Tomy was close and in serious trouble.

McGuckin was able to repair his boat and made a courageous attempt to save Tomy. "I think someone in that situation would have done exactly the same, I was the boat that was closest," he said.

"In that remote part of the ocean, it may take weeks before someone can come to him," he added.

Both were rescued by a French patrol vessel on 24 September.
