Pope greets school children on arrival at the airport

Pope Francis meets local children at Knock airport this morning.

PAUS Franciscus has landed at Ireland West Airport and is on its way to Knock Shrine.

The specially chartered Aer Lingus A321 plane with the Pope landed at 9:30 am and left for the sanctuary at 9.50 am.

His arrival was greeted with loud cheers as the plane emerged from a heavy fog.

There to welcome him in Mayo were Minister Michael Ring, Archbishop Michael Neary, Bishop John Fleming, Bishop Kevin Doran, Bishop Brendan Kelly, Bishop John Kirby, Fr. Dermot Meehan, PP, Swinford and administrator, bishopric Achonry, Joe Gilmore, CEO of Knock, Arthur French, chairman, airport council, councilor Blackie Gavin, cathaoirleach, Mayo County Council, John Dillon, of the airport's supervisory board, John McCarthy , head of the operation, Knock airport, his wife Mary and their four children, Saoirse, Michael, Robin and Ruby.

The flag of the local community was 100 children from four nearby national schools: Barnacogue, Cloonlyon, Tavneena and St. Attracta's NS, Charlestown.

The pope greeted all the children before his retinue left.
