The weather echoes the night of the apparition for a day that is remembered

As the story goes, the appearance on Knock took place in August 1879 on a wet, miserable night in the village of Co Mayo. A stubborn sheet of rain struck down when a young Mary Beirne saw the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph and St. John the Baptist at the tip of the small parish church.

It was then appropriate that the man above did not call the rain clouds in Knock yesterday. The heavy rain did not dampen the spirits of the estimated 45,000-strong crowd gathered at the shrine to witness the visit of Pope Francis to the West-Ireland pilgrimage site.

There were many early starts for many – the Dismore family set off from Co Antrim at 2:00 PM. Knock has a special place in the hearts of husband and wife Thomas and Helen, as they had visited when Helen expected the third child of the pair Ultan (2).

Music and singing prepared the thousands of pilgrims for the arrival of the Pope, with a mix of traditional dishes and hymns that raised the state of mind while the rain continued.

About 15 local people also read the testimonies of witnesses to the apparition at Knock while the crowd waited for Pope Francis. Molly Hunt (8), who lives in Knock, was chosen to be part of the re-enactment, which according to mum Pauline could only be described as a privilege.

"I'm excited," Molly said before her big moment, when she kept her costume from the 1800s dry under a rain-resistant poncho.

"I was picked up at school and I had to practice a lot."

For some it was not the first time they had gathered for a papal visit. "I saw Pope John Paul II in Limerick," said Patrick Manning from Mitchelstown, Cork. Patrick had rosary beads with him that had been blessed by Pope Benedict and now he had seen his third pope.

"It was a great experience," he said.

The Barbieri family represented families during the Angelus in Knock and greeted Pope Francis when he was welcomed on the shrine's stage.

Davide Barbieri (46) is a recovered addict (46) and has lived in his family since 2007. He originally came here in 1999 and was involved in setting up the Cenacolo center to help people become addicted.

"I was in Community Cenacolo because I was a recovering addict, I was on the streets, I was doing heroin and involved in crime, and in 1996 after five suicide attempts I went to the Cenacolo community in Italy," Davide explained, originally from Racconigi, a small Italian village 40 km south of Turin. "In 1999, a project to bring the Cenacolo community was led by myself and six other men."

Davide said he was homeless for three and a half years, but has changed his life through his faith. He met his wife Naoimh, from Dublin, with whom he had six children, through the community in Knock.

"She supported the community through prayer and gave us our providence," he said.

"I found what I was looking for – like the Bono! Knock song is a beautiful place where the children can grow up in a safe environment and the sanctuary plays an important role in our lives."

"Pope Francis is special," he added. "We have a child, we called him Francis after the Holy Father, we were expecting our sixth child when the Holy Father was chosen." His humility when he came to the balcony, his simplicity and his goodness, made my family fall in love with him. "

Sr. Mary Olivia (42), a carmelite nun who lives in a closed sequence in Knock, had missed her sister's wedding on Saturday, but was delighted that her brother and his family and her mother were attending the Pope's visit. "It was a dream today, a gift from God that he was here, my own calling as Carmelite, I find him so inspiring – his work with the homeless feeds my soul," she said.

Meanwhile, a relative of one of the original seers was in the colorful sea of people at the shrine. The great-grandfather of Katherine Tolan, Patrick Walsh, witnessed the bright lights that appeared on the pointed end of the church from a nearby field.

"It is very special to be here today," said Katherine, who was accompanied by her sister-in-law Caroline Eaton.

Caroline said: "It was a great feeling to see him."

Meanwhile, the religious fervor of Mayo's faithful GAA followers received a papal blessing when Pope Francis signed a Mayo sweater as he flew out of Klock's airport for Audrey Elliott.

She hopes that divine intervention will help to curb the & # 39; curse & # 39; to lift that Mayo's quest for an All-Ireland since 1951, when the province last lifted the Sam Maguire, has been destroyed.
