Update: Woman released without charge after car crashes into gates at government buildings



Update 21.25 hours: A woman in her fifties was released without charge after a car crashed in the gates of government buildings in Dublin this morning.

It happened shortly after 10 am when the Nissan Micra hit the gates on Merrion Street.

No one was injured in the incident.

There is a file on the way to the DPP.

Update 2.30 pm: Gardaí excluded every terrain link after a car crashed into the gates of government buildings. However, it is unclear what caused the crash.

A woman of about fifty was arrested after she had entered the entrance gates to the Taoiseach department on Merrion Street Upper in Dublin.

She was taken to Pearse Street Garda Station where she was questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

An official who witnessed the incident said she heard a bang before seeing the golden Nissan Micra at the main steel gate.

The woman who did not want to be mentioned said, "There was confusion about what was happening, I thought she lost control and bumped into the gate, but I'm not sure anymore.

"There was some commotion because people did not know what was happening, a few people went to the driver to see if she was okay, but she did not seem to be hurt."

There was only minor damage to the car and there were no reports of injuries.

Gardaí is still investigating the conditions of the crash, but they have excluded any link to terrorism.

The vehicle remained on site for some time while the officers did, but was later removed.

Gardaí can hold and interrogate the arrested woman for a maximum of 24 hours.

A spokesman for the Taoiseach Ministry said: "We understand that this issue is now being investigated by the Gardaí and therefore it would not be appropriate to comment further."

Update 11.55 am: Video: Woman (50s) arrested after cars fell into the gates of government buildings

A woman in her fifties was arrested after a car was struck at the gate of the government buildings.

It is clear that the woman, who is an Irish citizen, has tried to drive the golden Micra Nissan through the entrance in Merrion Street Upper shortly after 10.00 on Tuesday.

No injuries were reported.

Gardaí arrested the driver of the car on the spot and she was taken to Pearse Street Garda Station.

Gardaí says their investigation is under way, but they have excluded terrorism as a possible motive.
