The victim of a brutal knife attack in his own house died in the hospital for colleagues who tried to save him in the hospital where he worked.

Caretaker Gerard Fortune, 63, had his throat cut by a mad attacker who was known to him.

It is clear that Mr. Fortune suffered serious blood loss after the creepy knife attack had cut a main artery in his neck.

He was rushed from his home in Rutland Grove, Crumlin, Dublin to St. James's Hospital, where he worked as a caretaker, but the staff there could not save him.

His killer, who is in his thirties, is supposed to have fled the scene in a stolen car. A male suspect was later arrested and is questioned by detectives tonight.

The stabbing took place around 8 pm on Sunday evening and it is clear that the suspect had had drug use in the days before the attack.

Emergency services were called to the place where the victim with stab wounds in the neck was discovered and had lost a lot of blood.

He was rushed to St James's Hospital, where his colleagues tried to save him, but he was later declared dead.

The suspect is detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Crumlin Garda station.

Dublin City Councilor Daithi Doolan said the entire area was shocked by the tragic death of Mr Fortune.

He said: "My deepest sympathy to the Fortune family." The people in the area are very shocked about what happened, but unfortunately it is now a well-known event in the city.

"I also express my condolences to Mr Fortune's colleagues in St. James who have done their best to try and save his life.

"I hope that everyone with information will cooperate fully with gardai."

Gardai appealed to the public for help with their research and in particular they are interested in the movements of a red Toyota Yaris.

Superintendent Michael Cryan said: "On Sunday, August 19, 2018, we are looking for someone who was in the Rutland Grove and the Clogher Road area of ​​Dublin 12 on Sunday, August 19, 2018, to come forward.

"We are also trying to trace the movements of a red Toyota Yaris, which is described as a four-door hatchback with L-plates and partial registration 04-WW, which was driven out of the scene at Rutland Grove at around 20.00 hours before it reached around 20.20. hours at Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown.

"We would also like to appeal to anyone with dash cam images from the areas of Rutland Grove or Connolly Hospital in and around the indicated times to make it available to researchers."
