How young people are interested in acquiring knowledge, skills and skills in different folklore genres. What is the 35-year experience of the Latvian children's and youth folklore festival "Pulkā eimu, rodā teku", in the Culture Rondo studio that we discuss with the organizers of the festival Mara Mellén, Dina Liepu and Catherine Feldman.
"In 1984, Ernest Spitz, Ojārs Rode and Liāna Ose decided that children in Soviet times needed something based on folklore," says Mara Mellen, who has been involved with the festival since 1989.
"It is a long-term program," says Mara Mellen. "When we started Valdis Muktupāvelis and Ernests Spīcis, we had a great vision and ambition. We wanted to make a program for children, we wanted to do research, how traditional culture lives in today's environment. We had a beautiful and amazing vision. we went to the fact that in addition to books we also need records, because the world of sound and the healthy landscape offered by the traditional world is so different from modern culture that it cannot really be covered with a record without the help of a recording.
The project evolves over time, taking advantage of the digital world, while preserving the value of nothing more than direct communication with words and song, the experiences of children together, children with adults and the elderly.
Every year the participants learn about a folk tradition dedicated to a certain theme. The theme of PEPT 2019 is "Decorate the sun, decorate bees", according to which participants have acquired knowledge, skills and abilities in various folklore genres.
