"I am proud that I am leaving debts to all the countries where I lived and his ideas", – wrote influential for death, but today it is forgotten in the nineteenth century. Russian philosopher and father of classical anarchism, named Mikhail Bakunin. The story of the life and work of a persecuted, imprisoned and protracted dangerous thinker will be restored by God's Paleukai, theater artist and anthropologist, in the experimental performance "Bakuninas", whose premiere is planned for this fall.
For the first time, the "Bakunin" will be shown on September 1 at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale in the Maly Pavilion in Lithuania. After a week, on 7 September, the performance will take place at the Artistico Pietra Laboratory in Turin, and on 11 October it will be presented to the Lithuanian public at the Vilnius International Theater Festival Sirenos Club. Access to anarchist performances is free.
Unconsciously and in ignorance pushed
According to G. Palekaitė, the ideas of M. Bakunin (1814-1876), who were oppressed and ignored, became unusual, as today, with the rise of new waves of nationalism, populism, xenophobia, irresponsible media and agitation against immigration, sounds this is particularly relevant.
"Nowadays, when we go through a democratic crisis and some thinkers generally announce the end of their dominance, it is clearly becoming one: the society of tomorrow needs intellectual and political architecture, which unfortunately does not exist today. the implementation, it was interesting for me to consider whether the political ideas that have been forgotten and long been stigmatized – in this case M. Bakunin, "- says the director of performance, screenwriter and set designer G. Palekaitė, modern intellectuals and can inspire politicians.
Integrate sound art, photography and analytical text
M. Bakunin sharply criticized the tsarist government, the domination of religion, the rise of communism, and advocated communism and the unconditional freedom of the individual. For such ideas he was persecuted by all then European leaders, sentenced twice to death, but managed to flee Siberia from Russia to Japan, and from there to the United States and back to Europe.
In order to improve the life and work history of M. Bakunin, makers of theatrical performances will integrate sound art, photography and analytical text.
G. Palekaitė brought together an international creative team, consisting of the Italian actor Stefan A. Moretti, sound engineer Adam Palek, curator and photographer Alicja Khatchikian and designers of Queit Propaganda, a studio for photography, design and contemporary art in Turin.
"Bakunin" will expand the ideas of the Mol Pavilion
"Bakunin" has not only arisen on the ideas of contemporary thinkers, anthropologists and archaeologists, but also Bakunin himself. One of the sources of inspiration is archaeologist Dan Sayers and his discoveries. During more than ten years of scientific research, he has revived 3604 artifacts that originated from the deep ocean marshes in the eastern United States.
D. Sayers discovered that this swamp was close to those who had escaped slavery and people who had been locked into law for several hundred years. Refugee slaves lived in anarchist principles in organized communities without any contact with the outside world.
In this way the experimental version "Bakunin" is meaningfully extended and complementary to the ideas of the pavilion curators, artists Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas Mole Pavilion. In the light of existential, war and climate threats, the artists often say that the theme of a swamp makes it possible to explore immaterial forms of architecture, the necessity of living together with other forms of life.
The makers of Performanso try to give the audience the chance to look at contemporary global problems in an alternative, unpopular corner. "Bakunin" is meant for those who are interested in history, politics or contemporary experimental theater. The work is intended for viewers who think critically and innovatively, and these are not necessarily classical theater lovers, "says G. Palekaitė.
About the artist
G. Palekaitė (born 1987) is a creator and researcher of contemporary theater and performance, and joined anthropological and artistic practices in his works. She works with long-term projects and researches the themes of storytelling, collective imagination and creativity, making performances, scenarios, installations and publications.
She currently lives in Vilnius and Brussels, where she participates in the program of the art institute "a.pass". The maker was nominated for the Golden Stage Cross Lithuanian Theater Awards for scenography and costumes for the play "Kova" (2010), as well as for the stage design for the performance "Europeans" (2017).
The Lithuanian Molepavilion will be operational until November 25th at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale. Pavilion space functions as an infrastructure for design, pedagogy and art experiments.
