At a press conference on Friday, Jurgita Petrauskienė, Minister of Education and Science, said that the number of graduates fell by 7.5% compared to last year (according to preliminary data, it drops from 25.5 thousand to 23.6 thousand). The number of the first also decreases, but not so much (from 30.1 thousand to 29.5 thousand).

"At least the number of our first-year students who come to first grade will change if we compare it with the students of higher classes, which indicates that the demographic curve has stabilized at this stage," said the minister.

The duration of the following year, compared with 2017-2018, will last five days. As the minister pointed out, school children increase their school year by shortening their holiday time during the school year – they should not contribute extra days at the end of the school year.

"For five-year-olds five-day students are expected to contribute," said J. Petrauskienė.

The final decisions about adding extra academic days are taken by the schools themselves.

Asked whether the further extension of the school year proves that the practice started last year proved successful, J. Petrauskienė stated: "there are many educational institutions that have implemented this change in a creative and responsible manner, there are educational institutions that were not prepared for this change (…) this year is a good opportunity to learn from good practice. "

During the press conference, the minister said that, among other things, this year's graduates have to decide which exams this year will run – not in February, but in September. It is also provided that pregnancy work can be started in the eleventh grade (gymnasium of the third grade).

She noted that the main changes to the maturity exam in Lithuania could only be introduced two years before the exams. The minister then commented on plans to expand the cumulative assessment.

"There is now a suggestion for a discussion about which we need to agree, so there is no decision yet … Cumulative assessment consists of two parts: it is the average of subjects and maturity work, or those activities that are intended as volunteer work or participation in sports, music or other activities, where it can also be shown that a certain time, a real effort and real results achieved by these activities ", – said J. Petrauskienė.

"What is the percentage of the three parts I have mentioned – we must agree, we will certainly talk to school children and the teacher community, school leaders, the General Education Council, and only all agreed will be able to handle all changes to legitimize ", said the minister.

This year is the new academic year 1115 general education schools (1125 in 2017), which work the same as last year, and teachers – about 33 thousand. (In 2017 – 33 thousand 658).
