KUALA LUMPUR, Aug. 28 – The national holiday this year also marks the independence of Malaysia from a "kleptocratic government," said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The prime minister said that the outcome of the 14th general election gave the historical day the added meaning, according to the Malaysiakini news portal.
"We previously demanded independence from the British, and this time we became independent from an autocratic, kleptocratic government," he was quoted.
"It's something that we have to celebrate."
The PM added that the event would also be particularly useful for young people, saying that they now have the freedom to build the land they want.
Malaysia celebrates its 61st birthday of Merdeka on 31 August.
