It seems that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government has interrupted their work for them because of the weak governance of Barisan Nasional (BN) and the poor leadership in the past. Today (21 August 2018), Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad states that the PH government is trying to clean up a huge mess that the previous government left behind.
After completing his five-day official visit to China, Tun M told the Malaysian reporters that the PH administration is trying to resolve contracts and deals made with "stupidity" by the government of Datuk Seri Najib Razak, reported The Malay Mail.
He was quoted as saying,
"Such stupidity has never before been seen in the history of Malaysia." Ouch!
Tun M explained that it East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) and pipeline project contracts with Chinese companies had no exit clauses. As a result, Malaysia will now have to pay an unreasonable compensation for stopping the projects.
When the reporters asked Tun M if Malaysia would have to compensate the Chinese contractors, he replied that we had to pay them if the need arose. He also stressed that this unfavorable situation was caused by the terrible negotiations that were being conducted by BN.
"It is the stupidity of negotiations, there must be exit clauses, and now we have to pay huge sums of money," he said.
Tun M then went on to discuss his discussions with the Chinese leaders while he was there for the visit. He said that he needed to explain the current fiscal position of Malaysia to them to justify the discontinuation of ECRL and the pipeline projects.
Happy, The Chinese president Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Keqiang agree with the reason of Tun M because they saw that Malaysia had no choice but to stop the projects involving Chinese loans and contractors.
Tun M then assured our officials that they were not looking to negotiate any agreements and other matters relating to the canceled projects and said that they were striving to find the cheapest way to leave the projects.
"We now have to find a way to leave these projects at the lowest possible cost – it's all because of our stupidity," he explained.
In answer to the question of how the money is reclaimed, Tun M joked that they might have to pick it up from Najib because it was he who had signed the documents.
"He was the one who drew, what kind of stupidity is this?" He asked again.
This is definitely a very difficult position to get out of, especially when the financial position of our country is not doing so well. Hopefully the current government will find an effective way to get out of this mess.
