BINTULU: About 65 people became homeless after a fire with fire destroyed the 12-door Rumah Sengalang on KM5 Jalan Selilut Tatau-Bintulu yesterday in the wee hours.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), no injuries were reported to the 32 male and 33 female longhouse residents.

A statement from the department said that an emergency call was received at 3.49 am, resulting in the deployment of staff at the Bintulu and Tatau fire stations.

"The firefighters used water from the fire engines & Sungai Selitut to extinguish the flames, and no injuries were reported in the incident, where the victims of the fire now find shelter with neighbors and relatives," said the statement, who added the cause of the fire is being investigated.

In the meantime, Tatau police chief DSP Dennis Bunyam said when he contacted the victims that they had lost all their belongings during the incident. Adding a short circuit would have ignited the fire.
