KOTA TINGGI: Police foiled attempts to smuggle in contraband cigarettes by a syndicate known as "Geng Apeng", after the arrest of six men, including an Indonesian national, in four separate raids carried out in Tanjung Belungkor, here yesterday.
Kota Tinggi District Police Officer Supt Ahsmon Bajah said the first robbery was carried out by a team consisting of a policeman and 20 staff members around 4.30 pm after a public tip.
During the raid, the police arrested a 48-year-old local man at KM10 Jalan Terminal Feri, Tanjung Belungkor, and seized several contraband cigarettes valued at RM80,000 in a Toyota Camry.
"The total seizure includes 910 boxes of different brands, namely Marlboro Ice Blast (650 boxes), Marlboro Red (100 boxes), Marlboro Gold Lights (50 boxes), Gudang Garam Surya 16 (100 boxes) and Zhongnanhai 8 (10 boxes). a mobile phone and a walkie-talkie set were confiscated, "he said here today.
About 10 minutes later, in another robbery along the same route, the police arrested two local men aged 30 and 36, a Proton Waja, presumably syndicate members and a machete, a walkie-talkie set and two mobile phones.
The two suspects then led the police to a house in Jalan Surau, Tanjung Belungkor, at 5 am, where two local men aged 33 and 40 and a 35-year-old Indonesian man, who were also thought to be members of the syndicate, were held.
Meanwhile, the police in Alor Star took an online gambling syndicate with an exploitation value of RM3, 12 million, after the arrest of eight people, including a teenage girl, in two separate rounds around the Kota Star district.
Kota Star district police commander ACS Mohd Rozi Jidin said that a team of officers and personnel from the headquarters of the Kota Star District Police (IPD) and the Kedah Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK) carried out the first raid on August 16 in a house in Kuala Kedah.
"In the 10-hour police, the police arrested four men, two women and a teenage girl aged 19 to 23 who believed they were involved in the management of online gambling transactions.
"A 34-year-old man, presumably the employer of seven other suspects, was arrested in Taman Saga during the second robbery at 6.30 pm last Monday," he said at a press conference on the Kota Setar IPD here today.
