Singapore has not received Malaysian proposals for a third link via Pulau Ubin, Minister of Social Affairs and Family Development Desmond Lee said yesterday.
He spoke a day after Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said there was "a plan" to build a third connection with Singapore.
The newspaper The Star in Malaysia also quoted Johor Menteri Besar Osman Sapian because the state government was talking to a company about the project with the third link, which could be built over the next three to four years.
Datuk Osman said that the proposed bridge – which would start from Pengerang near Kota Tinggi, in Johor and ends at Pulau Ubin, in Singapore – could help to reduce congestion on the two existing land connections between the two countries.
In a Facebook message yesterday, Lee said he was at a meeting with Friends or Ubin Network volunteers, when he was asked about news reports on the third link.
"I have explained that we have not received the proposals from Malaysia and have no details." If we do receive it, the relevant authorities will certainly study it, "said Lee, who is also the Second Minister for National Development.
"Work on the Ubin project, to keep Pulau Ubin rustic and to protect the heritage and biodiversity," he continued.
