SABM calls on PM, DPM to ban child marriages



GEORGE TOWN : Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia (SABM) Australia today summoned Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Deputy Prime Minister, who is also Minister for Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to ban a child marriage in Malaysia.

In a press statement today, SABM stated that children should be in the protective environment of their families and schools and not in the bedroom of a predator.

"Entering child marriages will unite society more than any other reform because people instinctively understand that children need the protection of society and government.Nothing does the spirit of Malaysia Baru (New Malaysia) better than this practice, "explained the statement.

The controversial child marriage issue has become prominent when the case of a 41-year-old who took an 11-year-old Thai girl when his third wife came to light.

Based on the United Nation report in 2010, more than 82,000 married women in Malaysia, aged between 15 and 19, and nearly 16,000 girls under the age of 15 were in a marriage.
