Khairul Azwan Harun says that the senators did not want to disrupt the revenue collection by the government.
KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional (BN) Senators in Dewan Negara have allowed the Sales Tax Bill 2018 and the Service Tax Bill 2018 to be adopted today because they respect the mandate given by the Pakistani government to Harapan, a senator said .
Khairul Azwan Harun said it was no problem to sabotage the accounts, because the case would not benefit anyone and would only upset the government in collecting revenue for the country.
"We do not want to postpone the issue because we know that the government needs the money for the national agenda in which people are involved.
"Based on this, we have seen BN Senators who made it possible to pass on the bills if we respect people," he said today in the lobby of Parliament.
The turnover tax law 2018 and the service tax law 2018 were adopted by the Senate without amendments after the third reading.
Earlier there were concerns that BN Senators could block the invoices against the passing of Dewan Negara.
Meanwhile, Khairul Azwan said that opposition to the accounts would have been in vain because they would still be announced despite objections in the senate.
According to article 68 of the federal constitution, a bill that is not adopted in the Senate can be brought to the Yang di-Pertuane Agong and receive royal approval without further debate.
"We, the opposition, are certain that without the support of the Senate the government can still go ahead with the case," he said.
In the meantime, Umno Secretary-General Annuar Musa said that BN would not use her majority power in the Senate to thwart the efforts of the Pakistani Harapan government to introduce sales and service tax (SST) from 1 September.
He said that although some parties wanted to use their majority power to tax the government, BN did not intend to do so.
He said that there would otherwise be an impasse and that the government would be delayed in collecting taxes.
