PUTRAJAYA (Bernama): Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's decision to reduce the payouts of the 1Malaysia People & # 39; s Aid (BR1M) before it eventually expires is a correct decision, said Dr. A. Xavier Jayakumar.
The Minister of Water, Land and Natural Resources said that this is because BR1M is a long-term financial burden for the country.
He said that BR1M, which was introduced in 2012, was not spread out fairly among the people.
"With the current economic status of the country, BR1M is not sustainable in the long term, the handouts, from RM500 to RM800 and then to RM1.200 … where will it end?
"Not everyone understands it (BR1M), it is not distributed fairly on the ground, it is a political tool," he said when he met lunch here on Monday (27 August).
Recently, Dr. Mahathir said in an interview with a news portal that his administration strove to reduce BR1M in stages before it was discontinued.
On Sunday, August 26, the minister of economic affairs, Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, said that the disbursement of BR1M should be discontinued because it had elements of corruption to get the support of the population. – Bernama
