* SPOILERS ALERT * In the current edition of Anatomy of a K-drama Scene, we take a quiet introspection as to why Kim Seon-ho kept apologizing to Kim Hae-sook; after hearing about her illness, in the emotional startup sequence.
While the intense curiosity about who Seo Dal-mi (Suzy) chooses between Nam Do-san (Nam Joo-hyuk) and Han Ji-pyeong (Kim Seon-ho) has sparked a big debate on Twitter between DoDal and JiDal shippers, if there is almost one thing Startup fans can agree together; The relationship between Ji-pyeong and Halmeoni (Kim Hae-sook) surpassed everything else.
* SPOILERS ALERT * In the current edition of Anatomy of a K drama Scene, we have a moment of silent introspection in a tear-jerking Startup sequence between Ji-pyeong and halmeoni after the first discovers that Mrs. Choi is going blind due to an illness. After quietly noting that she uses Samsan Tech’s NoonGil app to calculate how much she made that day from her corn dogs’ shop, Ji-pyeong is seen with a remorseful look on his face. Referring to Ji-pyeong as her good boy, Halmeoni is shocked to see him all beat up (because of his fight with Do-san).
Ji-pyeong does not reveal what exactly happened and lies that it was his fault. Shouting at whoever it was that hit Ji-pyeong and saying cute that she’s never met anyone better than him, the latter gets annoyed, fights off Halmeoni’s hands and exclaims, “No, I’m not. I’m not good boy Ms. Choi you’ve completely misjudged me I’m a jerk who hurts other people with harsh words I pretend I’m the smartest in the world but in reality I’m just an idiot who doesn’t know I’m not a good boy. “Finally, a nervous halmeoni crashes down the walls of Ji-pyeong and asks him what’s wrong.
A heartbroken Ji-pyeong hugs Halmeoni tightly and continues to apologize profusely while Ms. Choi remains in shock. One could not help but try to decipher what Ji-pyeong apologized for. One example is because of how hard he’d been on NoonGil, claiming it was not a profitable business, and disapproving of the AI Yeong-sil, which turned out to be important to Samsan Tech’s helpful app. The fact that Do-san built the app for Halmeoni’s disease hit Ji-pyeong hard, as he feels he owes her for the way Halmeoni took care of him when he was at his lowest. It’s also the fact that halmeoni is the closest thing to a real family that Ji-pyeong has.
Another example could also be his guilt about the death of Kim Yong-san (Kim Do-wan) older brother and how he may have played a significant role in it. Although Yoon Seon-hak (Seo Yi-sook) assures him that he was not wrong in giving his heartfelt criticism, the guilt refuses to go away for a long time.
Dal-mi and his feelings for her have also been taken into account. When a Dal-mi finds out how she was fired by Samsan Tech, he asks about Ji-pyeong’s honest opinion, which he gives a little too harshly. Post collapses for Halmeoni, we see Ji-pyeong even apologize to Dal-mi for his actions. This prompts Dal-mi to lecture him, saying he should not be sorry for doing the right thing.
There are also parallels to a scene from Ep 1 between a young Ji-pyeong and halmeoni, who plays a big role in the Ep 12 series. While Ji-pyeong waits for his bus to Seoul after his fight with Halmeoni over the bank account money, Halmeoni comes to say goodbye to him and even buys him new shoes. ‘Promise me. If you get successful, don’t call me. Don’t call me when you get rich and get married. Don’t call me when you’re happy. I don’t want to be jealous. But call me … if you’re going through a rough patch. Come to me when it rains and you have nowhere to go like you once did. Don’t stand alone in the rain. You know where to find the keys, ”halmeoni tells an emotional Ji-pyeong.
An adult Ji-pyeong, who still finds it difficult to be more emotionally open, tends to break down just for halmeoni. We even see this happening in Ep 9 when Ji-pyeong has his moment of delayed revelation and reveals to Halmeoni that he has feelings for Dal-mi and is also angry that he can’t do anything about it. While the rain falls on him, it is halmeoni who offers her good boy a literal and metaphorical umbrella.
