Barcelona’s slump continues as Pique contributes to the Liverpool-esque injury crisis

Barcelona’s faltering start to the season was thrown into further chaos when the Catalan giants lost central defensive talisman Gerard Pique to an injury in the 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

The incident occurred when Angel Correa fell on Pique after a challenge from Jordi Alba. Pique looked in pain and was taken off the field and replaced by Sergino Dest.

Barça also suffered another injury as right back Sergio Roberto went down with a thigh problem.

The Spanish side now has serious problems with the central defense and also with the fullback. It’s something Liverpool fans will identify with after their crisis. Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk have sustained injuries and Trent Alexander-Arnold is out too.

According to the Catalan newspaper Sport (through the subway), the early message of the Barcelona camp is that Pique suffered a “serious” knee injury.

It has been speculated that he could be sidelined for between four and six months.

Barca head coach Ronald Koeman later said: “I am concerned about the injuries of Piqué and Sergi Roberto.

“We look forward to seeing the results tomorrow, to know how long they will be available.”

By defeat Barcelona is 10th in the list

The 1-0 defeat to Atletico was Barcelona’s third league defeat of the season in just eight games. They also signed two others. That left them languishing in 10th place in La Liga after Saturday’s games.

The defeat in the Wanda Metropolitano earns Koeman an unwanted award. He is the first Barcelona boss to lose Diego Simeone in La Liga.

Yannick Carrasco scored the winner in the halftime of the first half. The victory was canceled Atletico to joint top on 20 points, nine for Barca.

Koeman was unhappy with his team’s defense in front of goal.

He complained: “For a big team, taking a goal like this. That can’t be because it’s the 47th minute, we had the ball and then they score, 1-0.

“We checked and knew it was difficult to create many opportunities.

“We had a pair and with the score 0-0 the game would have been completely different.

“Like any coach, I am responsible for the results of the team.”

Barcelona will return to action in the Champions League on Wednesday. They travel to Turkish side Ferencvaros.

Europe this season so far been kinder to them. Barca have won all three group matches.
