The best games of 2018: Tetris effect

Tetris, like Mario, is one of those perpetual games that will probably never disappear. The core gameplay of Tetris is solid enough to stand on its own feet about 35 years after it debuted for the first time, but that has not stopped that countless developers tried to give their own unique twist to the puzzle game. Some of these attempts have been better received than others, but perhaps the most successful Tetris effect, who arrived on PlayStation 4 earlier this year.

The title of the game is for those who are not aware, a reference to the phenomenon with the same name. The Tetris effect, as Wikipedia explains it, occurs when someone spends so much time with an activity that their thoughts begin to bleed in daily life. With Tetris in particular, maybe people see falling tetromino's when they close their eyes, or are they starting to imagine how real-world items Tetris when they are on their way.

We have probably all experienced the Tetris effect with a kind of video game. For example, I can remember that after a long time playing I paid special attention to the flowers and plants in the real world The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. For as many as I have played Tetris however, over the years I have never experienced the Tetris effect as a side effect of playing Tetris self.

I do not know if what I experience with this game is actually the Tetris effect, but anyway, I've certainly spent a lot of time thinking about it since I started playing it.

The interesting part Tetris effect is that it changes Tetris so dramatically without touching the core formula. The goal is still to erase lines from tetromino & # 39; s and to avoid filling the playing field to the top. The more rules you knew at once, the more points you earn. You are therefore rewarded for thinking ahead and arranging your tetromino in a way that you can erase multiple lines with a single block.

Tetris is perhaps one of the best examples we have of an "easy to learn, hard to master" game. Like chess, the rules of Tetris are easy enough to learn, and practically anyone can immediately start to enjoy the game. To be really good at Tetrishowever, it takes a lot of practice. The professional Tetris players from the world show us that this game can be played at a very high level that few of us will ever reach.

Nothing changes in that Tetris effect. You have the option to store a block and use it later, and there is also a new "Zone" engineer in the travel mode where you charge a meter by deleting lines. You can activate Zone to freeze the action in the playing field and collect as many released lines as possible before your energy runs out.

There are also a number of different modes with their own special rulesets and challenges, but as far as the main Journey mode of the game is concerned, the ability to swap blocks and Zone is the only new mechanic and they do not change the core game.

No, the biggest new addition happens outside the playing field. Tetris effect is a game that is complicated to music and impressive background images. In many cases the music starts almost inaudibly and the background is empty. As you play, however, the music begins to build and the images grow in intensity, resulting in a fantastic feast for the senses. As soon as you encounter the line goal of an internship, you immediately go to the next phase and start all over again, with a new number and a new theme for the graphics.

It sounds a bit rough to say that Tetris effect is a "feast for the senses", but that is the best way to describe it. Tetris effect is a game where you can easily get lost, not only because of the focus you need to arrange your tetromino's, so you can erase lines and complete a stage, but also because of the immersive images and great soundtrack. Your tetromino's even add to the music as you rotate them and put them in place, which only makes the experience better.

Throughout Journey mode, gameplay, music and graphics all combine a very relaxed game, but with a nod this can turn into an intense race against gravity while trying to keep up with the speed at which tetromino's fall. Even my best descriptions can not do justice to this game because it is just something that needs to be experienced.

For that reason it is a pity that the game is exclusive to PlayStation 4. Tetris effect is a game that should be available as much as possible because it is so good, but with that in mind it is easy to understand why Sony wanted to block it on its platform. Nevertheless, this hopes that the exclusivity period of Sony is one that is coming to an end, because it would be great to have this game on something like a Switch.

Tetris effect is also compatible with PSVR, where I have not had the chance to try it. It's not hard to imagine that the game gets even more compelling within the limits of a VR headset, and I'm almost tempted to go out and buy a PSVR to see how Tetris effect plays with it. If you are in the same boat as me and you do not have a PSVR headset, I can say with certainty that the game is still very compelling and entertaining on a regular old TV.

Although Journey mode can be completed in a few game sessions, there are many other modes to keep you playing for a long time. Some modes, such as Marathon, focus on the classic Tetris experience, but there are also other playlists in which relaxing or challenging gameplay is central. If you like Tetristhere is plenty to do here, even if you find yourself completing the Journey mode fairly quickly.

In the end, Tetris effect is a game that Tetris not only keeps relevant decades after the first launch, but also takes it to a whole new level. It is difficult to give a name Tetris game that is undoubtedly the best, but if we want to rank all the games that have been released over the years, Tetris effect would certainly be at the top of the list.

If you own a PS4 and you want to Tetris (who does not like it Tetris?) then you should definitely check out this game. The price tag of $ 40 seems a bit steep at first, but if you are something like me, it will not be long before you decide it is money well spent. Tetris effect was absolutely a game that surprised me in 2018 – I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did, and at best I thought it would be a nice little distraction from the games with big names that were launched next to the game . I am glad, however, that I made the decision to buy it, because I can see that it is a game that I will go to for months, maybe even years later.
