World Disability Day, declared by the United Nations in 1992, is celebrated on December 3.

Disability is a complex concept that has evolved over time, thanks to the social disability movement. Currently, the view of the medical model to consider it as a disease or a sequel to it has been overcome, which was only treated with rehabilitation to try to improve functional conditions. Today, the concept of disability is based on a social model that focuses on physical and attitude barriers that unnecessarily restrict the full and effective participation of disabled people.

From this perspective, a person with a disability is someone who, with one or more physical, mental or sensory deficits, of a temporary or permanent nature, when interacting with various barriers present in the environment, impedes his full and effective participation in society or limited. , on par with the others.

Practicing exercise and sports for people with disabilities offers numerous health benefits, with the added value of promoting their social integration and helping in the rehabilitation process. Group sports promote social skills, empathy and social development assistance.

In children with disabilities, participation in physical and sports activities is not only beneficial for their well-being, but is also essential for their development and learning. In fact, thanks to physical activity, children, young people and adolescents improve their self-esteem and develop social relationships, in addition to learning to overcome their limitations, so it must be considered essential to face life with the utmost autonomy and independence.

Despite concerted efforts to create an inclusive environment for all, many people still believe that people with disabilities cannot take care of themselves, let alone exercise. However, we have scientific evidence that the benefits of physical activity have been proven, both for training the muscles and for losing weight and controlling weight, or simply to feel better about yourself. Proof of this are the Paralympic Games, the highest ambition of the athlete with a disability.

In the case of children with disabilities, the leisure offer is increasingly wide in all areas, cultural, recreational and sports, with many adapted physical activities that are fully accessible and safe for them.

Finally, the physical activities that people with disabilities can do are so many and varied that they can put their ideas into practice and develop their imagination and creativity without limits.
