Mexico City- The incoming government gave the technical report from the New Mexico International Airport (NAIM) to national engineers and gave them only 15 days to analyze the document.
Although the revision would initially start on August 15 and would end on September 15, Javier Jiménez Espriú, Secretary of Communication and Transport at López Obrador, said he would complete the analysis on 5 September.
"This is because the time is short," Jiménez Espriú said on an express question about the date on which the document was received by the engineers.
Other technicians who were present in the Old Chapel of the Mining Palace, Jiménez Espriú expressed that time was very small.
"We do not ask you to do a two-week study, but to give your opinion (…) I regret that it goes so fast," he replied to these accusations.
He emphasized that the NAIM is in progress, so it is necessary to complete his analysis as soon as possible.
Jiménez Espriú said the project unfortunately has a delay of at least two years.
"Unfortunately, we think it will be very difficult that there are no unforeseen events (…) and that this will be at best in 2023," he said.
Previously, about the questioning of the decision of the population to think about whether or not to continue the construction of the NAIM, Espriú said that a new form of citizen participation is beginning to be inaugurated in Mexico.
He argued that people will give their opinion on subjects that are theoretically technical, so it is important that they have good information about this.
He stressed that it is therefore important to have the opinion of the engineers.
He confirmed that even in the past, the population has made presidential elections without knowing the background of economics or politics.
Offers austere NAIM Espriú
If the new airport continues, it will happen with cutbacks and even cancel related works, said Jiménez Espriú.
"If it were decided to continue with the new project, we will review the project to remove tinsel, luxury, etc.", he said and even stated that works that are part of the entire project can be canceled.
He also noted that, although they analyze an austerity plan, they still do not define how much those savings would be.
As to whether they are not afraid that before these changes the platinum LEED certificate that presumes that they will obtain the NAIM will be lost, he said that this is not the plan.
"That would be a tragedy, then we will not get in," he said in an ironic tone.
"We arrive at an airport, that or whatever, we arrive at a decent, functional and sober airport".
