MEXICO CITY (AP) .- The authorities of Quintana Roo investigate the causes of the explosion that occurred early Thursday in a restaurant bar near Playa del Carmen that caused panic among the population and tourists.
The rumble heard several blocks from the place, so the municipal government of Solidarity activated the red code. Staff from the Civil Protection Department of the City Hall and ambulances also arrived on site.
The explosion took place in a bar on Calle 30, between First Avenue and Fifth Avenue, a few meters from the beach, in the center of the city.
Witnesses who heard the explosion say it was a grenade, though elements of civil protection indicated that an LPG tank might explode. The explosion shook various houses in the districts of Palmas, Ejido, Gonzalo Guerrero and Las Flores.
