Conditional prison sentence for threatening prime minister

A 26-year-old man from Apeldoorn was sentenced to four months in prison in Zutphen for conditional imprisonment for threatening Prime Minister Mark Rutte and some other politicians. The judge ruled that the threat with terrorist crime has not been proven. In addition to the conditional prison sentence, the man has a probation period of three years in which he has to cooperate with treatment in a clinic. He is also housed in an institution for assisted living. The man uttered the threats via e-mail, in the course of August to October last year.

The Public Prosecution Service announced on Monday that in 2017 the Team Endangered Politicians – which has existed since 2005 – reported more possible threats than the previous year. It received 331 reports last year, of which 90 resulted in a conviction. In 2016, 239 reports were made, of which 65 were assessed as punishable. (NRC)
