Hennis-Plasschaert will succeed the Slovak Jan Kubis in the autumn, who has been the highest UN representative in Iraq since 2015. It is the second time that a Dutchman will hold this position. She follows in the footsteps of Ad Melkert, who held office from 2009 to 2011.
The former minister counts as a confidant of Prime Minister Mark Rutte. She was in second place of the VVD list at the last elections for the House of Representatives. After the elections, her name quickly came to the surface as the new foreign minister. But that road ended shortly before the Rutte III cabinet took office.

Hennis-Plasschaert was Minister of Defense until the beginning of October 2017. She resigned after a critical report from the Dutch Safety Board about an accident in Mali that killed two soldiers. She has been in the Lower House since then.
After her resignation, she decided to stay in the Lower House. She had been elected with nearly 150,000 preferential votes. The 45-year-old Hennis was involved in the National Budget and international finance. Her name recently appeared in the list of possible candidates for the mayorship of Amsterdam.
Born in Limburg made a career in Brussels and sat in the European Parliament from 2004 to 2010. The VVD then took her to The Hague. Two years later, the reward followed and she became the first female minister of defense.
It is the second prominent VVD who announced this week to leave the Chamber. Thursday, foreign spokesman Han ten Broeke know that he is leaving because of an 'unequal' relationship with a group employee in 2013.
