The boxes with Merci chocolates were transported in a number of large cooler bags. When the driver and his fellow passengers could not give a good explanation for the enormous amount of sweets, they were arrested.
The police suspect that the three men, who drove in a car with a foreign license plate, are guilty of so-called "mobile banditry".
It often happens that thieves from other countries go on their way with prepared bags in a certain Dutch region and steal specific goods in a number of supermarkets that are scarce or very expensive in their country of origin.
Mobile banditry is one of the files that the National Unit of the police tries to tackle more actively, including with audits such as Saturday on the A2. Other popular items in this group of thieves are pistachio nuts, shaving stuffs, toothpaste and baby milk powder.
