The police in Rotterdam have intercepted a large batch of illegal tropical hardwood. These are shelves that are used for dining tables.
The tabletops – which are very popular with Dutch consumers – have been seized. The wood is probably felled in Indonesia.
The sale of this type of wood is only permitted if it has been harvested legally and with a permit. "That's because it comes from primeval forests. There aren't many left of it," says environmental detective Peter Hartog to RTV Rijnmond.
The Rotterdam police and the Indonesian police work together on the case. The Indonesian authorities have provisionally obtained the exporter's license. The importer is suspected of illegally importing and selling hardwood.
