A rescue dog named Lily from the Bay of Islands has become an internet experience after her shrewd escape in the main street of Kawakawa – with a gigantic flag on the ground – caused a smile on the faces of tens of thousands of Facebook users.

CCTV footage of the leisure-time furball runner – accompanied by Yakety Sax, the song made famous by the Benny Hill Show – has been viewed more than 320,000 times in the first 16 hours since it was posted last night.

Lucie Green, a volunteer at Bay of Islands Animal Rescue, took the bass dog for a walk last week when she decided to stop at a local company to treat Lily.

But the dog was not interested in waiting to see what surprise might be in store, instead he shot, despite being stuck to the big Coca-Cola flag.

"It was not until I saw the video that I realized that I had fired traffic, which is rather alarming, but I only wanted to grab her before anyone hit her." Green told the New Zealand Herald today, who describes the nine-year-old as a "grumpy old lady".

"After I had taken her home, I realized that I still had to return the flag and pay for my sausage," she added. "I could not believe it."

Thousands of people have since commented on the video, with many admiring the dog's spirit.

"I laugh my guts out of it is so funny," wrote Facebook user Annie Hicks.

"Crack up go doggie," added Katie Bennett.
