All lanes have reopened on State Highway 1 north of Auckland via the Brynderwyn Hills after a severe crash this morning.

Two people – one with critical injuries – were taken to the Whangārei hospital for treatment after a car and a fully loaded fuel tank collided shortly after 6.30 am.

It is expected that SH1 would be closed this afternoon until 5 p.m. because the fuel had to be removed from the tanker before it could be pushed off the road.

Heavy-duty towing equipment is used to remove the vehicles.

Detours were placed but were not suitable for heavy vehicles, which meant that dozens of trucks had to be parked until the road was reopened, according to the New Zealand transport company.

Traffic is supported in the area and motorists are advised to be careful and to drive to the conditions.

Motorists are thanked for their patience after the interruption.
