Homeowners in South Auckland claim that motorways expand and damage their homes 1 NEWS NOW

A tornado has ripped through a Taranaki road, roofs of houses lifted and streamlined tonight.

The incident took place on Belt Road, in New Plymouth, at 5.30 pm today, police confirmed.

Shaun Hill, from New Plymouth, told 1 NEWS that he was on his way home from work when "there was a lot of rumbling and everything went black."

"It became a little frightening when it got closer, but at first I thought I might as well get a video," said Hill.

Six houses had their roofs torn off by the power of the tornado, he said.

There are no reports of injuries after the incident.

The Taranaki Civil Defense has warned motorists to stay away from the area to avoid congestion.
