Residents cleaning up after tornadoes hit two areas on the North Island yesterday 1 NEWS NOW

MetService says that thunderstorms are likely to occur on large parts of the North Island today, as well as near the top of the South Island.

This morning there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms with hail and rain of 10-20 mm per hour in Northland, Western Auckland, Taranaki, the Kāpiti Coast, Wellington and Nelson.

A smaller chance of storms extends to Coromandel, Waikato, Bay or Plenty, the central North Island, Manawatū, Marlborough and the northwestern country.

This afternoon and in the evening there is a moderate risk of storms on Northland, Auckland, Coromandel, Bay or Plenty, Waikato, Taranaki, the Kāpiti Coast, Wellington, Marlborough and Nelson / Tasman.

In Taranaki and Waikato, these storms could cause strong gusts of wind up to 100 km / h, says MetService.

A Severe Weather Watch is in place for Nelson west of Motueka and the eastern Bay of Plenty areas, where heavy rain is expected today.

Road Snow warnings are present for Lewis Pass (SH7) and Lindis Pass (SH8).
