A farmer from North Canterbury has been fined $ 34,000 for illegally cleaning up a riverbed.
Jan Scott Rutherford has grubbed approximately 70 hectares of land in the riverbed in the Waiau River, which is not allowed under the Resource Management Act, the Canterbury Regional Council said.
Mr. Rutherford pleaded guilty of six charges and was sentenced earlier this month.
The deputy of the city council, Stefanie Rixecker, said that Rutherford knew the rules, but did the work without further discussion with the council for his own commercial profits.
An enforcement order has also been issued to bring the country back to its original state, estimated to cost about $ 130,000 to Rutherford.
