Traffic came to a standstill, while a mother duck runs her chicks over the highway during rush hour.

Forget the motorists, police escort a mother duck and her ducklings on the highway during rush hour.

A mother duck decided to ride her chicks on the Northern Motorway on Wednesday morning when commuters hurried to beat the 8-hour traffic.

The ducks were taken off the road by the police near Tristram Avenue (southbound) at 7.45 am after drivers slowed down.

The ducks moved at a reasonably fast pace but hit a wall and were stuck until the police helped them off the road.

According to a spokesperson for the New Zealand Tourist Board, the delay in traffic was minimal, even though it was during the peak period in the morning.

"Animals or birds on the highway occasionally happen On the highway network of Auckland from time to time policemen called to escort cows, goats or sheep from the highway.
