– Like a movie

King Harald and Queen Sonja are the royal couple of Norway since the death of King Olaf in 1991. Although Harald and Sonja assisted each other in all years, it was a very problematic start of the relationship between the Crown Prince and his unmarried. Queen Sonja, born Sonja Haraldsen, was bourgeois and not royal, as tradition suggested that a queen should be.

It was far from anyone who wished that the then 31-year-old from the winner in Oslo would be the next Queen of Norway, and the relationship led to a big debate about the future of the monarchy in Norway.

– The story of Sonja and Harald is like a movie show. Royal Copenhagen meets citizens, they fight for love, see adversity, but eventually come together and live happily for the rest of their lives. I would not be surprised if it is a film of the day, said the aforementioned royal expert of Anders, Anders and Johan Hansen.

Folded pladask

The first time Sonja saw her future husband was when the royal family returned to Norway after the war. When the Crown Prince landed at Honnørbygga in front of the Town Hall in 1945, Sonja was in scouts among tens of thousands of people who welcomed the royal family.

A few years later – when she was 14 years old – Harald and Sonja met in Hankø for sailing. The meeting was short and it would take several years before their roads would cross again.

The autumn of 1959 was at the feast of the deceased Johan Stenersen, and the meeting turned out to be the beginning of a long and difficult romance between the two.

"I remember standing side by side in the evening, holding me in my hand and thinking," What am I doing now? "Sonja told us earlier about the autumn night in 1959.

A few weeks later Harald called Sonja and invited her to the Warskole cadet ball. There, the two were photographed for the first time and the photo was printed on a magazine. The photo touched the rumors and in the years that followed, Harald and Sonja had to meet in secret.

Walked it off

Until then, the press had made careful mention of everything they knew about the crown prince and his flame, but five years after the couple had assembled at a party for the first time, the press was given the light. The crown prince has a relationship with a bourgeois girl and he is determined to marry her.

Newspaper headlines started the discussion seriously. The newspapers were very negative and concluded that a marriage would mean the end of the monarchy. At the same time there are readers of the population who believed that Harald had to follow his heart.

That the relationship was not accepted by the official Norway was heavy for the couple and they ended in shorter periods to several times.

"I had very mixed feelings, because I loved Sonja, but also had a bad conscience for my father and Norway, King Harald stated in a documentary about the king's struggle for love in NRK's documentary.

King Olav has long been very negative about a marriage between Harald and Sonja when he feared that the people would turn to the royal family. He hoped that Harald would become a princess, and he never met Sonja during the nine long years before the engagement was finally approved.

King Olav would probably love Harald, but he was old-fashioned and unwilling to listen to the younger generation, explained Stavseng.

– Have approval

On his own 30th birthday, Harald had to celebrate with a dinner in the castle without Sonja, the eight-year-old girlfriend, next to her. But when Sonja herself was born 30 months later, she was invited to a company on the royal ship.

Harald had explained to his father that if he did not choose Sonja Haraldsen for his wife, he would not marry.

"I do not know what an ultimatum is, but I said that if I can not marry her, I will remain unmarried, but I do not know if it is an ultimatum," King Harald explained in the documentary.

The king asked for advice from the government and parliamentary leaders, but another year had elapsed before the answer came and the king gave his "yes".

Rumors began to go on the day before the engagement. NTB had sent a message to the Norwegian and foreign press that an engagement would be announced the next day. Despite the deadline, the Danish radio sent the message directly. NRK quoted the Danish radio and the hysteria was under way.

The case continues under the photo.

On March 11, 1968, Vice President Bernt Ingvaldsen went to the pulpit of the Storting and read the following message from King Olav to the elected representatives:

"I am pleased to tell you, Mr President, and the Norwegian Parliament that, after the Prime Minister, I have sought advice from the members of the Government, from you, Mr President, and from the political group chairmen, I agree with this. My dear Son , Crown Prince Harald, is today engaged to Miss Sonja Haraldsen, the daughter of the deceased Karl August Haraldsen and the surviving wife Dagny Haraldsen, born Ulrichsen.

Then the Norwegian flag was hoisted to the top of all public buildings in Norway. And it was also freshly marked on the remaining fishing rods in private possession. Yes, it was pure 17-May-vote.

At two o'clock everything was expected when Harald and Sonja came to the Slotts Balkong.

"Harald and Sonja probably remember all the jubilee calls and the warm reception they received from the people, congratulations from near and far, from heads of state and private, even King Olav might have been touched by the enormous support that Sonja and He had hardly expected him, Stavseng explained.

A press conference was held in the castle a few days later.

"Åra seemed occasionally hopeless," said Harald, an opinion queen who undoubtedly shared Sonja:

"Now we have waited long enough.
