The Vulcano Misti It is 17.7 kilometers from the Plaza de Armas Arequipa. At 5 a.m. Today 138 athletes left from the heart of the city to reach the top of the massif. They participated in the XXIV International Ascent Competition Misti.

After more than three hours of walking, the first one to arrive was Diego Gonzalo Chiquicondo Condorado with a time of 3 hours and 44 minutes and 30 seconds. In 2017 the first place marked a time of 4 four hours and 37 minutes. This year the record broke in the time of arrival.

In second place came José Manuel Quispe Mayma, who made 3 hours and 52 minutes; and in third place was Lucio Menacho Castellanos with 4 hours 2 minutes and 20 seconds. The latter was the winner of last year. The participants followed the route of Los Pastores which is a slope and which is only used for professional sports competitions.

Members of the High Mountain Rescue Unit (USAM) are installed along the route. At strategic points, ambulances and first aid kits were installed, all connected to communication radios.

According to the Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute (Ingemmet), the volume of the cone is 60 kilometers with a height of 1,800 meters. The crater has a diameter of 960 meters and a depth of 450 meters.

It is an active volcano, which emits gases and has a constant seismic activity. Volcanologists estimate that the last eruption was between 1440 – 1700. In case of a possible explosion, the ash reached a height of five kilometers at the summit of the volcano and spread over the entire city over a distance of 40 kilometers.

The climb to Misti It is a traditional contest that takes place every year as part of the celebration of the anniversary month of Arequipa.
