The return of sweet peppers has been reduced by 97% since 2011 economy

Since 2011, the return of peppers due to the presence of pesticides has been reduced by 97%, said the vice-president of the commission chili pepper of the Association of Exporters ( Adex), Walter Seras.

Seras said that some of the problems of peppers and peppers are related to productive, commercial and health problems.

"There is a lack of training to get quality products that are safe, in Adex We work hard together with Senasa and INIA to offer solutions. Between 2008 and 2011, for example, the return of peppers due to pesticide use was observed, but now this has been reduced by 97% and that is important. The productive chain is progressing, "he added.

Other problems are the lack of knowledge among small producers of health parameters, the presence of fruit fly that limits the production of quality, access to markets and the presence of ochratoxins due to the humid climate. "By training producers we can solve these problems", he added.

Seras said that Peru is a major exporter of fresh and dried capsicum and that private public work needs to be consolidated. "The north of the country is the pillar, it is the most important producer, the most developed maquila is here in Trujillo and we have the most important maquiladoras in this city", he emphasized.

He said that pepper, red peppers, peppers and piquillo were the main export crops and said that the Olmos and Chavimochic projects have contributed a lot to their evolution.

"In recent years the varieties have diversified, the guajillo and the chili ancho, they have contributed a larger volume to our exports.As regards domestic consumption, we see that more peppers & peppers are consumed in Mexico ( 14.9 kilos per capita), while in Peru the consumption is only 3.9 kilos, despite being an important producer, "he said.

"You have to remember that in the United States it is 6.2 kilos and in China more than 13 kilos, which means that we have a window to keep growing by domestic consumption, if at least the Peruvians demand 50% of what we produce. , "he said.

The Capsicum convention takes place on 5, 6 and 7 September at the hotel Costa del Sol in Trujillo. Important themes are discussed for the sector: cultivation methods, health, harmlessness and access to markets, among others. It is organized by Adex and has as entities that coordinate the Minagri, Mincetur, Regional Government of Liberty, Special Project Chavimochic and PromPerú.

Peru has the largest diversity of peppers in the world, with a production of 164,000 tons per year. In 2017, peppers exported 211 thousand for more than US $ 238 million.
