"We must be left alone to decide for ourselves," Chief Justice Teresita Leonardo-De Castro said in her speech at her first flag ceremony as head of the Supreme Court.
"People outside want to judge us on what they see or hear from a distance, but it is us, the judges and officials of the Court who know what is happening within the Supreme Court and we must be left alone", De Castro said. .
The newly appointed chief judge said: "We demand respect from the other equivalent departments of the government."
The Castro was not only welcomed by her colleagues, but also by members of the Supreme Court who called a "Blue Monday" event as a symbol for the return of peace in the judiciary. The event was initiated by the Supreme Court Employees Association (SCEA), the same group that founded the "Black Friday" and the "Red Monday" protest against Maria Lourdes Sereno.
In her speech De Castro stated that the Supreme Court did not go over the chief judge, because the chief magistrate is only the first, but "equal to the other judges of the Supreme Court."
She reiterated her intention to restore collegiality in the Supreme Court when she stressed that the Supreme Court rulings are based on the collective action of her members.
In the past De Castro came into contact with Sereno, accusing the former chief judge of violating collegiality by taking unilateral decisions before the court. / CBB
