Maine reports the first flu death of the season

Health workers from Maine have confirmed the first flu death of the flu season 2018-2019.

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that a person died of influenza during the week ending December 22. The person whose name was not released was older than 65 and lived in Hancock County.

So far there have been 17 hospitalizations and 168 confirmed cases this season. A year ago there were 99 hospitalizations and 373 cases at the same time.

Last season 82 of the flu died in Maine, making it the deadliest year for the flu in decades.

Over 80,000 people throughout the country died in the United States during the 2017-18 flu season.
