Kalimera, welcome back to normal?

Mario Centeno & # 39; s video about Greece has several possible readings, from the content (indicating what the author thinks, admitted) to its impact (the desired, but also the unforeseen). I admit that, after all that has been said, I am more interested in the impact and meaning of the answers to Centeno, which define a number of interesting contours of Portuguese politics.

However, the content deserves to be written in stone. There was a process from which "we all learn lessons", the Eurogroup president begins by saying: "This is history now." Admittedly, a Kabbalistic message can be revealed, because it has not become clear what such flamboyant lessons would be, but if these are the following references to the "bad politics of the past" in Greece, then we are in pure dimbselbloemês. In the same dictionary is the paternalism of the added "responsibility" that now belongs to the Greeks (unmarked in the video with a picture of Tsipras). But most importantly, according to Centeno, with the austerity measures, "the economy has been reformed and modernized", although it is known that "these benefits are not yet felt in all parts of the population," but "." In this sense, Greece is today become normal again. So welcome back, "a smile and is full of function, so moralistic, as now said.

About the failure of European politics imposed on Greece, I have already written my opinion here a few weeks ago. I then noticed that Moscovici, a French socialist, had crossed his paternalism in the bacchus (Ulysses returned to his native country, the man wrote), but Regling, of the European mechanism that would manage the money, dared to take the hard hand. show that the lender will guarantee. In general it can be said that the concepts & # 39; responsibility & # 39; and & # 39; control & # 39; more realistic Prussian sound when called by the creditors. It is a fact that the Greek economy has collapsed, survives with a wave of cheap tourism and is a paper boat thrown overboard in anticipation of a miracle that will become a nightmare in the first fluctuations of the markets. The praise of Centeno's "return to normality" is therefore a way to endorse a policy that the Portuguese government repeated to the exhaustion that, in its view, was wrong. "Greece was saved from the troika", celebrates an editor in support of Centeno, and everything sounds like a normalization of the failure of austerity.

Now it is precisely because the message is also for Portuguese to see that the way in which parties and commentators interpreted Centeno is so important. I believe there are three categories of essential answers.

The judge clung to the subject. Argument: the minister is contradictory, he supports in Greece what he says to reject in Portugal. OK. But this argument is a bias for CDS and PSD. First, because Ryeen, what they criticize is not what it does, but it is not to say what it does, because in its success it would only complete what the good began, that sobriety that is the path of virtue. Now it is a matter for boys to attack a government to do what the critic himself thinks is right. In the Greek issue, again the same effervescence: "two faces", says Miguel Morgado, "two faces", protests with originality John Almeida. But which face do they like and what do they hate? The Portuguese austerity was great, the Greeks more exaggerated, they say, but Centeno is continuador of Vítor Gaspar and for that reason it is ours, soon we hate it. The fact that there is someone in this most holy law who thinks that this conversation moves the electorate is a fatal sign of the loss of a sense of reality. Morgado and Almeida, who made the summer commentary, do not want to know and take every opportunity to remember the million voters who fled them in 2015 and who are very happy with the policy that has put Portugal in a state of deteriorating the recession. Everything predictable.

On the left, a surprise. The PCP has made the usual declaration to disqualify, the problem is the European Union. And it is, but the problem is also when the problem is not discussed. The Block preferred to say that the implicit theorem of Centeno, the success of the Greek program, is "ridiculous". It can also be, if it is not tragic. Moreover, it would be "insulting to inform the Greeks and the Portuguese". Is it so much? In any case, there was a lack of pedagogy and a clear debate. Centeno's speech deserves other questions: if this is the "return to normality", if this is how the "economy is reformed and modernized", is it really worth it to lower wages and pensions? And the privatization of ports and airports? Because these are the matters that matter when there is a crisis and, yes, it is for Portugal, it is a "lesson".

Finally, the main reaction of all came from the PS, precisely from his former spokesman, João Galamba, in the most difficult comments. It was said to be a single voice, but silence should not be measured so much because there was no other written criticism, but much more because the President of the Eurogroup had no meaningful support. Nobody said anything in favor of Rye. Grave silence. I do not know if, because their comrades thought the video would only be a "peak" of vanity, and that is a light trade, or if by shame they were not what they said in the election campaign.

But there is a revelation in these debates. There are people who probably fear the decisive weight of the Centeno-Santos Silva alliance in the government, and feel that, in this way, politics is being driven by cynical acts of an anonymous minister in the newspapers, plus a sobriety feels irrational (delay medical expert competitions to save a few cents, or the minister of finance to parliament to answer the health committee, hand over the railway material or postpone investments that later become more expensive, for example). By praising the troika in Greece, the minister, who apparently prepares for international flights, says, and that is why his video is a career improvement – also that when the economy gets tighter the income should be forever. And that is exactly what must be discussed until the experience and the ideas form a solid alternative to this austerity, which is the machine of destruction. Centeno thus did a favor on the Portuguese left, noting enough preparation for a competent economy.

The minister, however, would be well advised to note that Kalimera, the word with which he starts his speech, has a different meaning in Greek and its transliteration into Portuguese.
